우리 할아버지는 이야기를 시작하실 때마다 늘 "라떼는 말이야"라는 말을 앞에 붙이세요.Every time Grandfather starts a story, he always puts the phrase "Back in my latte, you know" in front of it.

나는 처음에 갑자기 웬 커피 이야기인가 싶어 어리둥절했어요.At first, I was bewildered, wondering what kind of coffee story it suddenly was.

알고 보니 그것은 "나 때는 말이야"를 재미있게 바꾼 표현이었어요.It turned out that it was an amusingly changed expression of "Back in my day, you know."

발음이 라떼와 비슷하다 보니 언젠가부터 사람들이 농담처럼 쓰기 시작한 거죠.Because its pronunciation is similar to "latte," people started using it like a joke at some point.

할아버지는 이 말을 꺼내고 나면 꼭 옛날이야기를 길게 늘어놓으세요.When Grandfather brings out this phrase, he always tells old stories at length.

십 리나 되는 길을 걸어서 학교에 다녔다는 이야기가 끝도 없이 이어져요.The story that he walked ten li to school continues without end.

요즘 세대가 얼마나 편하게 사는지 강조하고 싶으신 거예요.He wants to emphasize how comfortably the current generation lives.

하지만 같은 이야기를 매번 듣다 보면 슬슬 지치기 마련이에요.However, if you hear the same story every time, it's natural to gradually get tired of it.

사실 이 표현에는 웃음과 함께 약간의 경계심도 담겨 있어요.Actually, this expression contains a little bit of caution along with laughter.

나이 든 사람이 젊은 사람을 자꾸 가르치려 들면 "꼰대"라고 불리기 때문이에요.It's because if an older person repeatedly tries to teach a younger person, they are called a "kkondae."

그래서 요즘은 어른들이 스스로를 낮추며 "라떼는 말이야"를 농담처럼 쓰기도 해요.So these days, adults also use "Back in my latte, you know" like a joke, lowering themselves.

어색한 세대 차이를 부드럽게 넘기려는 나름의 지혜인 셈이죠.It's a kind of their own wisdom to smoothly get past awkward generational differences.

나도 언젠가 그 말을 하게 될까 생각하니 괜히 웃음이 나요.As I think about whether I will also say that phrase someday, I laugh for no reason.
